2nd RnMonitor Workshop

2nd Workshop on Radon Monitoring and Mitigation Strategies in Public Buildings

The 2nd workshop on the Project “RnMonitor: Online Monitoring Infrastructure and Strategies for Active Mitigation of Radon Gas in the Interior Air in Public Buildings of the Northern Region of Portugal, was held on November 29, 2018, at the School of Technology and Management of the Polytechnic Institute of Viana do Castelo, Portugal.  The workshop had the following agenda:

Doctor Ana Antão, a professor at Instituto Politécnico da Guarda and a specialist in geology, presented a paper on “Geological Characterization of Minho Region”, in which she carried out a detailed analysis of the geology of Alto de Minho and its importance in the study of Radon in buildings.
Doctor Alberto Otero Pazos, a researcher at Laboratório de Radioatividade Ambiental  in A Coruña presented a paper on “Radon Mitigation in Buildings: the Galician Case”, in which he presented a set of Case Studies regarding the mitigation of Radon gas in buildings, with a particular emphasis for the buildings that constitute the Campus of the University of A Coruña.
Eng. Pedro Martins, fellow of the Project, presented a communication called “Web-based Spatio-temporal Visualization of Radon Concentration” in which he described the process of creating an integrated platform for real-time visualization of the concentration of the Radon gas in the monitored buildings.

Doctor Sérgio Lopes, professor at Instituto Politécnico de Viana do Castelo and coordinator of the project, presented a communication called “In-Building Communications for Radon Monitoring” where he presented research results related to the development of a beta version of the Printed Circuit Board (PCB) and respective range tests in indoor and outdoor environments. After the test phase an alpha version of the PCB was developed, designed to communicate the measurements obtained by the sensors for a service in the cloud.

The event was attended by public with different profile, including local decision makers, academics, companies and researchers and students.
